Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, Belgium

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM) is one of the world's leading institutes for training, research and assistance in tropical human and veterinary medicine and health care in developing countries. The Department of Biomedical Sciences focus on the pathogen including vectors and animal reservoirs. Their main expertise lies in the microbiology and parasitology, molecular biology and epidemiology, immunology and ecology of tropical infectious diseases. Their field of action covers on one side the fundamental and translational laboratory research, and on the other side the biological, ecological and molecular aspects of the transmission and population dynamics of the pathogens, their intermediate hosts and reservoirs in the field. The research strives to better understand the biological, ecological and pathological processes; to translate these processes into new biomedical applications;to develop interventions to control vectors and animal reservoirs.

Freie Universität Berlin (FUB)

Institute of Parasitology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine, Berlin, Germany

Since its foundation in 1948, the Free University of Berlin (FUB) (www.fu-berlin.de) has developed into one of the largest universities in Germany. It offers more than 90 programs of study, i.e. the entire spectrum associated with a traditional university. It cooperates closely with other Berlin universities and with extramural institutions in the region. Due to its founding history as an inter-national university, it has a unique international network of more than 100 partners worldwide. The Institute for Parasitology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine of the faculty of veterinary medicine of the FUB has ample experience in more than 40 years of research and training in tropical veterinary medicine. Research and Development activities are focusing on the control of emerging and re-emerging diseases, including vector-borne and zoonotic diseases including trypanosomosis. Emphasis is put on integrating best-bet disease management practices including vector control towards the improvement of livestock and, thus, increasing income and human welfare.

Leibniz University Hannover (LUH)

Faculty of Economics and Management (Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät), Institute of Horticultural Economics (Institut für Gartenbauökonomie), Hannover, Germany.

This research group deals with the analysis of the role of shocks and risks for the development of poor countries and emerging market economies. Central to the analysis of these factors is the concept of vulnerability. To date the concept of vulnerability still lacks a comprehensive and empirically well-founded framework in the development economics literature.Through interconnected research in different fields of economics, the determinants of vulnerability are investigated. The role of macro and micro risks and shocks of vulnerability to poverty are investigated.

Veterinarians don't just save animals. In Africa, millions of people survive because of their animals. Veterinary assistance is often non existent and therein lays the difficulty. When the herd is sick, it’s the village that dies. VSF Belgium develops networks of veterinary assistance in the most remote regions of Africa. By caring for animals, we fight hunger and poverty with the local population.
